For print materials, never go smaller than 2 cm × 2 cm (about 0.8 inches). At that size most modern phones can scan reliably from 15–20 cm away. For outdoor signage, scale up — 10 cm minimum for anything viewed from more than a metre away.
Always keep the foreground (dark) color significantly darker than the background (light). A contrast ratio of at least 4:1 is recommended. Avoid light-on-dark combinations where possible, and never use gradient backgrounds — flat, solid colors scan most reliably.
If your QR code will be printed on physical materials that may get scratched, folded, or partially obscured, choose the High (30%) error correction level. This allows the code to still be scanned even when up to 30% of its data modules are damaged. For digital-only use, Medium is fine.
QR codes require a blank "quiet zone" margin of at least 4 modules around all four sides. When placing your QR code in a design, ensure there is enough white space between the code's edge and any surrounding text, images, or borders. Removing this margin can cause scan failures.
Always scan your QR code with at least two different phones before printing at scale. Use both the native camera app and a dedicated QR reader app. Test at the actual print size, not just on screen. Yes. WiFi QR codes are supported on iPhone with iOS 11 or later. QR Studio generates clean standard QR codes without a built-in logo overlay feature. However, you can add a logo manually: download the QR code as SVG or PNG, open it in a design tool (Figma, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, Photoshop), and place your logo in the center. Make sure to use High (H) error correction — this recovers the data obscured by the logo, as long as the logo covers no more than ~25–30% of the code.
Static QR codes — which is what QR Studio generates — never expire. The QR code simply encodes data (a URL, text, WiFi password, etc.) directly into the pattern of squares. As long as the destination (e.g. a website) remains active and the physical code is not damaged, it will work indefinitely. "Dynamic" QR codes that redirect through a third-party service can expire if you stop paying, but that is not applicable here.
A QR code can hold up to 7,089 numeric characters, 4,296 alphanumeric characters, or 2,953 bytes of binary data at the lowest error correction level. In practice, shorter data produces simpler, smaller, and more scannable codes. For best results keep URLs under 200 characters, text under 300 characters, and use a URL shortener if your link is very long.
QR codes are just containers for data — they themselves are not harmful. However, a QR code can link to a malicious website, trigger an unwanted call, or connect to a rogue WiFi network.
